Words and News from Yer Central Mailer for CTO #20

Welcome to one of the greatest geek summers of all time! Not only are we getting movies like Iron Man, Hulk, The Dark Knight, Hancock, Speed Racer, Indiana Jones, X-Files 2 and a new Mummy movie, but we’ve got new D&D rules coming out, a Champions online game to look forward to, and the biggest Comic-Con International ever! It’s good to be the geek!

Cover Lovin’

And since the 4th of July falls within this issue, it seemed appropriate that we celebrate it with a shot of our favorite patriotic powerhouse, Americana. Enjoy the awesome and awe-inspiring shot by Betsy Luntao, courtesy of K.C.’s vast AC stores. The eagle has landed! No, seriously. Look. It’s an eagle. And it landed…

Troy Hickman’s Twilight Guardian hits the streets!

Yes, we have three comic writers amongst the ‘Times membership, but only one of them actually gets PAID for it. Our own Troy Hickman is back on the charts, and rocking the charts had with his new one-shot called “Twilight Guardian”, based on an old mini-comic if his and born again at the request of those wise folks at Top Cow (you may know them better these days as DC, baby!). Twilight Guardian is part of something called “Pilot Season”, where a group of one-shots will come out, like TV pilots, and the fans will then vote for which one they think should get its own regular series. The top two will get the honor, and if you haven’t read TG yet, believe me, you’ll want this to be one of them. Be sure, when August rolls around, to get online and vote for our boy. You can get all the details on that here. Fantastic return to the newsstands, Mr. Hickman, and perfect reminder of why we dig your writing so much. We’ll do our part to make sure we all get to learn more about this OCD gal and all nine blocks of her universe.

And as for me doing MY part? I'll be wearing this simple but to-the-point tee shirt at Comic-Con this summer...

Clobberin’ Con XIV Set to ROCK San Diego HARD!

Yes, it’s that time of year again, and summertime means Comic-Con in San Diego, and that means it’s time for the annual gathering of ‘Timer buddies to storm America’s Finest City for the 19th year in a row! Looks like a big one this year. I’ll be there, Joel will be there, Ben and Kaye will surely make their (at least one day) appearance, Aaron AND his lovely bride will be there (for her very first Con! I’m envious at how hard her unsuspecting mind is going to be blown), A.T. will be there, and a couple of Forte buddies, Adam and Jim, will be making it, too! There are a couple of other maybes in the wings, too, so we’ll see as this thing gets closer.

And as you can imagine, with all the geek films out this summer, all the films yet to come, all the huge TV shows going on (let’s not forget this is BSG’s final season…and that we’ve got Joss Whedon’s return to TV coming up!) and all the big comic events like Secret Invasion and Final Crisis going on, it’s safe to say this is going to be the biggest one yet, set to top last summer’s first-ever Comic-Con sellout. Countless thousands will be taking over the convention center, every hotel in a ten-mile radius, and every restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter. The sights and sounds should be unforgettable, and I, myself, have my badge and my airline ticket and am counting the days!

Next Issue Deadline

Deadline for the next CTO issue is August 2, 2008, for inclusion in the August 3, 2008 issue. Just put your stuff on a web page (or in a PDF) and e-mail the link (or the file) to me at:

Have a rad summer, and see you next year! Okay, see you later the summer, actually…
