Since 1974, when General Motors released the Arrowsmith, described in advertising as a "VTOL Coupe", there have been affordable flying passenger cars. While they are priced slightly higher than standard cars, they still fall within the realm of reasonable affordability. The cars run on efficient, JP4 fueled internal combustion engines, have a range of several hundred miles between refueling, and can hold four passengers in some comfort. However, the trunk spaces of these cars leave much to be desired.
Operation of such vehicles over most larger municipalities is usually restricted by law, and is licensed by most state's Department of Motor Vehicles. Flight plans are registered with the local airports and air-traffic control authorities.
A growing community started by a coalition of American, Swiss, and French corporations, this Antarctic colony is the permanent residence of 13,000 men, women, and children. Located at <nowiki>McMurdo Sound</nowiki>, Frostbite City started its existence as a Lunar Colony Test Station. Pressurized, self-sufficient, and with living space for 200 persons, the Test Station was used to perfect technology and procedures still used in the space colonies. After later being used as the Mars Colony Test Station, the International Space Agency sold the facility to a multinational conglomerate in 1986. It has since expanded it into the city it is today.
Gateway Station is a multi-national space station administered by the United Nations on behalf of its primary sponsors (the United States, Great Britain, Russia, the People's Republic of China, Brazil, and Japan). Construction was completed on Gateway Station on September 4, 1989, and it was opened for business a week later. Located in earth's trailing LaGrange point, the station houses nearly a thousand workers in the various low-gravity and no-gravity factories, laboratories, and shipping points, and serves as a staging point for the continued colonization of the solar system. It is the first stopping point for any cargo or personnel going to Armstrong City on the Moon, Welles Base on Mars, and Stronghold Orbital Prison. (Note that prisoners are shipped directly to Stronghold, while supplies for the prison are shipped to Gateway first).
Advances in genetic engineering since the year 1970 have enabled scientists to totally rework animal and plant life. While scientists still cannot create a life form from nothing, they can take an existing life form and change its attributes. The best-known example of such animals is the herd of pygmy elephants currently on display in the Tokyo Zoo. These elephants average a foot and a half tall at the shoulder, and weigh an average of forty pounds apiece. Likewise, several zoos now have on display animals that were extinct up until recent years.
Research into human engineering is a subject not widely encouraged, though some pharmaceutical companies are trying to get permission to begin creating cloned biological replacement organs for people who need heart, liver, or eye transplants. In addition, some rogue governments have looked into genetically enhanced soldiers, a practice openly forbidden by [[the Geneva Protocols|Encyclopedia Entry: "The Geneva Protocols"]].
Ralph Norton (1941 - Present) is a minor superhuman with the power to consume and digest nearly any organic material. He was featured in People Magazine in March of 1985. He currently works as the manager of a landfill near Bayonne, New Jersey.
Coming from the US/USSR Summit of 1985, the Geneva Protocols ban the use of superhumans in any nation's armed services, militias, or para-military units. Their employment by law enforcement and intelligence agencies for internal security is not prohibited. Breaching the protocol will deny access to UN technology by the offending nation and extremely negative reactions by leading nations.
The underground "meta-prison" known as the Grand Gulag was originally founded by Joseph Stalin in 1927 as a forced labor camp after the discovery of catalyte near Tunguska in Siberia. Over the intervening years, the Soviet Union dug deeper and deeper into the frozen ground, forming a large catacomb of tunnels. Once the catalyte ore was played out, the tunnels were transformed into a massive maximum security prison. Stalin christened this facility "the Grand Gulag"; if it ever had any other designation, its has been lost to history.
When the first metahumans arose in the Soviet Union in 1939 and 1940, Stalin had them imprisoned until their loyalty to the Soviet state (and to him) had been proven. Those whose loyalty had been proven became agents of the government; those whose loyalty remained in question became permanent residents. After the fall of the communist government in Russia, the Grand Gulag was converted for use as a metahuman prison full-time.
The prison has a reputation for being escape proof. The facility is almost entirely underground with tightly controlled access, and the nearest signs of civilization is a village of 54 peasants who still haven't quite made it to the 20th Century, let alone the 21st located almost three hundred miles away. Of the seven people the Russians acknowledge as having successfully escaped from the Gulag, six were later found dead from exposure on the Siberian tundra. No trace of the seventh prisoner has ever been found, but authorities assume he also died in the attempt.

* 8 oz semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
* 1 cup whipping cream
''Production:''
* Place the chocolate and the cream in a medium saucepan over medium to medium-low heat.
* Cook until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth, stirring constantly to mix completely.
* Serve warm.
Cover and store any unused sauce in a refrigerator for up to one month.

''517 CE:'' Artaius is crowned King of Cumbria, despite a questionable claim on the throne of that kingdom. More important than being distantly related to the Cambrian royal family are his follower's willingness to "remove" the rest of the Cambrian nobility if they oppose Artaius's ascension to the throne.
''537 CE:'' King Artaius of Cambria is killed in battle with the Saxons at Camlan; after his funeral, the magical sword Excalibur is stolen from his tomb by Myrddin and spirited away. Welcome to the seventh issue of //''Black Hats And White Capes!''//, currently the online home of the Butlerverse, my homebrew Champions campaign world.
Last issue I mentioned how the world had changed. It has proven since then to continue to change. My brother Nathan, who is another ardent Hero Gamer, separated from his wife (well, to be accurate, he basically stopped trying to make their marriage work, since she had stopped a year or so back) and now abides in my living room. I'm sort of conflicted about this, because while I hate the fact that he's going through a divorce, I love the fact that I've got my best friend and baby brother back in my life now that he's moved back home from the extremely northern part of Georgia.
I've also got to make a guilty confession. My kids came to me and asked that I run a D&D game for them. Their friends (or at least their gamer friends) all had Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition, and they wanted me, the best GM they knew, to run a game for themselves and their friends. So for the past month, our Saturdays have been taken up with medieval adventures using the new rules. I have to say there's a lot to like about the new Dungeons and Dragons edition... much more to like than version 3 or 3.5... but I still have to say I liked Second Edition more. Be that as it may, I'm having some fun with it.
I just hope you all can forgive me.
As of July of this year, I'll be moving back to Central Florida, the part of the world from which I spawned forty-two years ago (well, forty two years and fifteen days as I write this). The job market is better down there for chefs (what with Disney, Universal Studios, Sea World, and all those thousands upon thousands of hotels), and I'll be closer to the rest of my family.

The Butlerverse is a roleplaying gameworld used in several different Superhero Roleplaying campaigns over the course of about 24 years. In it's last major incarnation, it was a series of 25 superhero PBEM campaigns all taking place in the same shared world. In all cases, it used the the Hero System, published by Hero Games, as a rules base.
The Butlerverse is a parallel world, quite similar to our own in some ways, and in others very different. The geography is almost identical. Life developed along the same lines. Wars were fought, and nations rose and fell, all like they did in the real world. Historical events and notable individuals are usually identical to those you find in the real world. The biggest difference between the Butlerverse and the real world is the existence of people endowed with powers and abilities far beyond those of common mankind. And their influence is readily apparent.
The Butlerverse is simultaneously as realistic as possible while also as four-color as possible. My aim was to recreate some of the best elements of comic book "reality" in a gameworld while acknowledging that the real world is a pretty neat place as well.
