In the slang that has developed around superhuman culture, "Ahab" (sometimes "Captain Ahab", but usually just "Ahab") is a derogatory term referring to any supervillain who obsessively pursues one particular hero above all others and beyond all possible reason.
The best known "Ahab" in the Butlerverse was Simon "Simple Simon" Bieber, a villain who obsessively fought Knightblade during the late 60s and 70s. Simple Simon continued his war against the hero even after Knightblade publically retired. A week after Knightblade's death from heart failure in 1982, police found Simple Simon's body in a hotel room in Chicago. The villain had hung himself, leaving a note that explained that, with his having "escaped his wrathful vengeance", the villain saw the world as no longer having a point.
Jack Butler has been playing various <nowiki>RPGs</nowiki> since 1979 (the year he turned 12), starting as most gamers do with Dungeons and Dragons. He first got introduced to Champions in 1981, and ever since superhero roleplaying has been his favorite genre of game. He's been working on his Butlerverse since his junior year in High School. That's 1984, for those who are curious.
He's divorced (twice), has two sons (one from each marriage) who live with him, and is a chef by profession. He can be reached at chefjackbutler @ gmail.com. Just remove the spaces from the address.

I do most of my gaming through PBEM. To put it bluntly, I live in the middle of the Appalachicola National Forest, which means my nearest neighbor is a quarter mile away. I could head into Tallahassee easy enough, if I wanted to make a two hour round trip drive in order to spend several hours with college students, most of whom see me as a creepy old guy intruding on their turf. Not to mention that nearly no one in Tallahassee plays Champions.
So I made some announcements, and when the dust from the character construction cleared, I had seven characters that were rarin' to rip. The campaign was using Scott Bennie's //Gestalt// concept (with a little tweaking) as the source of all superpowers, so each player would have to pick some concept for which their character would be the living embodiment.
After the dust from the character construction process settled down, I was left with seven heroes, all ready to get out there and fight evil: Centurion, the power armored gestalt of a better tomorrow through technology; Cestus, the gestalt of the Marquess of Queensberry Rules; Gremlin, the gestalt of technological malfunction; Kid Kinetic, the gestalt of the reckless love of moving fast; Mister Mitzvah, the gestalt of Hebrew mysticism; Psimon, the gestalt of brains over brawn; and Sentinel, the gestalt of security.
The campaign began with a call to action. The heroes, all known in the city but all considered second stringers behind the Guardians (the city's primary hero team, with a stature equivalent to that of the Justice League or the Avengers), were called in to assist defend the city from an aquatic invasion. Dagon, a monstrous sorcerer from beneath the waves, had conjured up an army of fish-men and giant lobsters that crawled out of Tampa Bay!
The Guardians flew to confront the <nowiki>Arch-Villain</nowiki> directly, leaving the "other guys" to fight the monsters. Psimon and Mister Mitzvah went to defend a museum, Kid Kinetic rescued several police officers and kept a giant lobster from detonating a gas station, Centurion defended the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, Gremlin confronted a band of fish-men attacking an ambulance, while Sentinel and Cestus cleared the way to a hospital...
And in the sky, a mystically-created hurricane began to brew, stirring around the headquarters of the Guardians...

The following events all took place in the Butlerverse on January 14:
*''1940:'' British hero Maximan and Nazi ubermensch Sturmfuehrer battle each other for the first time in the skies over Krakow, Poland. Their fight manages to destroy nearly half the city before Maximan is forced to withdraw.
*''1962:'' Under pressure from the United Nations, the United States withdraws its military forces from Cuba. Former self-proclaimed dictator Fidel Castro, who had apparently been awaiting this opportunity, uses his guerillas to topple the fragile government and re-establish control once American support is removed.
*''1983:'' The Jupiter Space Probe 2 (<nowiki>JSP2</nowiki>) successfully lands on Europa, one of Jupiter's many satellites. Almost immediately, it begins sending data back regarding the ice coating of the moon. A day later, <nowiki>JSP2</nowiki> successfully drills beneath the ice coating, reaching the liquid water beneath the frigid surface. Later in its mission, <nowiki>JSP2</nowiki> transmits data to Earth suggesting and then confirming the presence of carbon based microbial life forms in the Europan water.
*''1984:'' More than 50 people are killed when the small town of Snyder, Oklahoma is destroyed by the sudden appearance of a thunderstorm and half a dozen tornados. The town had no warning. The number of tornadoes and the small size of their area of activity suggests to some experts that the tornadoes were artificially generated and controlled by some outside force.
Welcome to //''Black Hats And White Capes!''//, an online exploration of the Butlerverse, my homebrew Champions campaign world. Since 1984, every Champions campaign I've ever run has been set here. Come on in, feel free to poke around and enjoy yourself. I certainly do.
I'm currently armpit deep in the conversion of the Master Lists of Limitations to this new tiddlywiki format, and am converting the entire Butlerverse to its new paradigm (that of Gestalts being the source of superpowers).
If you have any questions regarding the Butlerverse (or if you need a good recipe), feel free to ask.

When Tarot first came to the attention of law enforcement authorities in 1972, it was widely believed that the organization was one of the many results of the appearance of superhumans: that is, it was a recently created gathering of super powered criminals and heavily armed terrorists, just like any number of others.
It came to a great shock to those authorities when evidence surfaced suggesting that Tarot has existed, in one form or another, since the mid-sixteenth century.
Tarot was originally founded by Niccolo Machiavelli as a "wealthy gentleman's club". It was originally a place where the financial and political elite of Europe could gather and discuss matters of import. As time passed, the group became more ruthless and exclusionary in its dealings, until only increasing the wealth of its members was important and all others were considered opponents to be crushed.
The leaders of Tarot were selected from the wealthiest and richest families around the world, as long as their "ethical temperament" was of the correct sort. Allegedly, Joseph Kennedy, father to President John F. Kennedy, was once a member of the ruling council. Other names alleged to have been connected to the council were John Paul Getty, John J. Astor, Andrew Carnegie...
Since the advent of the metahuman, Tarot has recruited villains that fit the theme of the Major Arcana in a Tarot deck. This team answers only to the Emperor, going where he will and taking on any missions he so directs. Technically, the Emperor himself is a part of the Major Arcana, though he rarely goes on any missions.
''Area Of Operations:'' Worldwide
''Leadership:'' The Emperor (pictured above), with the assistance of the Governing Council, rules Tarot with an iron hand. The Governing Council handles the day-to-day running of the organization's worldwide operations. Each member of the council has authority over a specific area of the world, and within their area, their word is absolute; only the Emperor can overrule them.
''Goals:'' Over the last five hundred years, the focus of Tarot has expanded from ruthless mercantilism to the eventual economic control of the entire world. The Emperor does not wish to control the world through politics or military might, but rather through business, money, profit, and economy... He knows where true power lies, and intends to be at the top of the heap.
''Tactics:'' Contrary to public belief, Tarot does not engage in such small-scale crimes as common bank robbery or convenience store hold ups. Neither do they engage in wildly terroristic acts full of dogmatic statements but with little potential profit. According to a source, the Emperor believes (most likely correctly) that such activities are pointless and don't bring in enough income to justify the risk. On occasion, such activities might be undertaken on a grander scale (such as the 1985 robbery of the gold reserve of Luxembourg, in which Tarot made away with 1.3 billion dollars in gold before driven away), but only if they contribute to some greater goal.
Most of Tarot's income comes from perfectly legal sources. It is suspected that the organization is secretly a stockholder of several major corporations, and that they hold patent, through dummy companies and blind cut-outs, on hundreds of items found in the common home. Tarot's criminal activities include drug trafficking (especially in new designer drugs created in Tarot's laboratories), weapons smuggling (including the burgeoning trade in small-scale nuclear weapons), gambling, pornography, kidnapping, and extortion.
It is suspected that they control trade unions in several countries, and evidence has come to light that they run a "white slavery" ring, importing unsuspecting young American girls to Asia for use as "pleasure companions". In addition, they are known to use sabotage, industrial espionage, and assassination against political and business rivals. They funnel money to various political organizations and strongmen around the world, usually through legitimate covers, in order to influence the global economic situation.
While individual cell leaders pursue their own projects (with the approval of their superiors, of course), the organization as a whole has several projects they are pursuing as a whole:
*//Project Oz:// This project is an ongoing search for mystic artifacts currently thought lost to history. The Emperor particularly has an interest in recovering the Spear of Destiny, which allegedly makes the one who possesses it invincible.
*//Project Myrmidon:// Project Myrmidon is a long-term research project looking into the feasibility of Tarot mass-producing its own genetically-enhanced (or outright designed) super-soldiers. So far, Project Myrmidon has been little more than a money-sink for Tarot; to date the project has only produced a single soldier who wasn't a hyper-tweaked freak subject to sudden heart attacks or strokes.
*//Project Paladin:// One of the largest thorns in the Emperor's side is Lord Doom. For his own reasons, Doom has occasionally interfered in Tarot's schemes. For this, the Emperor decreed in 1962 that the downfall of Lord Doom should be one of the primary goals of Tarot. Over forty years later, Tarot is still "working on it".
*//Project Monkeyhouse:// For similar reasons, Tarot is working to eliminate or neutralize Doctor Simian and his organization, Prime 8. The Emperor sees this project as being a bit more urgent than Project Paladin, since Prime 8 is much more active (and violent, and abrupt) in their interference with Tarot.
''Internal Relations:'' Tarot's workaday agents, as well as the supervillains of the Major Arcana, are all very loyal to the organization, and for several good reasons. According to Checkmate intelligence, the organization pays well, offers excellent benefits, and has instituted several "family friendly" policies, such as parental leave and full medical and dental insurance, retirement funds, investment opportunities, scholarship programs, and daycare when needed. Despite the disbelief of Checkmate analysts, it appears that Tarot takes care of its employees better than even Checkmate and the Global Guardians do.
The tycoons and Captains of Industry who make up the Governing Council are apparently another story. While enjoying almost limitless wealth and privilege, most are loyal to the organization only because of their personal fear of the Emperor. While they follow his orders and are always careful to support the organization as a whole, they otherwise are divided into various factions. These factions constantly jockey with one another for influence, power, and profit. They scheme against each other in a Machiavellian dance of barely suppressed violence and hatred... an irony the Emperor truly enjoys (he has to restrain himself from giggling when he hears someone or something called "Machiavellian").
''Reputation:'' Tarot is considered by every law enforcement agency and group in the world to be the most dangerous criminal threat the world has ever faced. Their potential resources are almost unlimited, and their reach spans the planet. It is heavily suspected that they have been involved in the assassinations of at least three heads of state, and are known to have infiltrated the governments of both the United States and France.
The general public considers Tarot to be a "super-mafia". Most other criminal agencies treat Tarot very, very carefully...
