MAGIC is formed in San Diego. The new superteam, after
several changes in membership early on, decides upon a 5 member
team: King Arthur, Whiplash, The Bouncer, Hologram, and Wingboy.
Headquartered in the Richards Industries building, the team runs
afoul of a Cobra scheme to discredit them and successfully defends
the city from a major Cobra offensive. The team is heralded by the
city, the press, and S.H.I.E.L.D. for averting the crisis. They
emerge as the California's premiere superteam. |
What is past...and not known...
| 1991 |
Robert Lewis a.k.a. Whiplash awakens in a secret laboratory
finding himself strapped to a table and wearing some sort of apparatus
on his head. Working free of the bindings, Lewis escapes only to
discover that he is in a DREAM facility. He is able arm himself
by subduing a guard and begins searching for a way out. Accessing
the computer, he discovers that Hologram, The Bouncer and Wingboy
are also prisoners in the facility. He also discovers his battlesuit
is there as well.
Retrieving his suit and mounting a daring raid on the heart
of the DREAM facility, Whiplash is able to free Hologram and Wingboy
from similar devices that he was trapped in. Upon releasing his
teammates, the three realize that they have all been imprisoned
in some sort of simulated dream world, linked to share common
experiences. The three locate The Bouncer, unfortunately they
are too late. Baron Blitzkrieg and his "medical staff"
have already opened him up and subjected him to several experiments.
They do however confront Dr. Emil Gargunza, the facility"s
project director and designer of the dream world. In a grueling
fight MAGIC is able to escape, call in a S.H.I.E.L.D. strike team
and bring Gargunza, a Nazi war criminal, to justice.
Once back in San Diego, the members of MAGIC discover they have
been thought dead by friends and family for the last 18 months.
They also discover that Arthur, while posing as a DREAM collaborator
actually did join their ranks and turned his teammates over to
DREAM, hoping to rid the world of three mutants and one mutant
sympathizer.
Vowing to bring the traitorous Arthur and his master, Baron
Blitzkrieg, to justice, MAGIC launches a campaign to close down
DREAM once and for all. |
| 1992 |
MAGIC reasserts itself as the premier California superteam as
they form stronger ties to S.H.I.E.L.D. and begin to pool resources
to root out covert DREAM operations. |
| 1993 |
The Justice League disbands after a decade and a half of service
citing the coming defeat of DREAM and the lack of aggression by
Cobra as a signal to rethink the need for such a team. Many members
remain active in their own cities. The vigilante team The Avengers
continue dispensing their own brand of justice. |
| 1994 |
Using his connections with the Mutant Defense League, Hologram
is able to bring the terrorist leader Polarity to S.H.I.E.L.D. to
stand trial. Many members turn to Hologram for new leadership, but
he declines. Instead, the former terrorists join with MAGIC and
S.H.I.E.L.D. to track down the remaining DREAM operations worldwide. |
| 1995 |
Using ideas gained in the dream reality, Whiplash is able to help
the sentient base AID Guennivere attain a mortal body. The two are
finally united. Behemoth and Cannonball join MAGIC for a while as
Wingboy takes a leave of absence in order to pursue his academic
career. Hologram and Nick Fury persuade Captain America to lead
a new Academy for Gifted Students, aimed at teaching young heroes,
mutant and non-mutant alike, in the safe use of their powers. |
| 1996 |
Wingboy joins the team again briefly as Behemoth is killed in
a senseless DREAM raid. The anti-mutant group, now on the verge
of collapse, begins killing mutants in public. No longer content
to foster public opinion against mutants as a chief means of attack,
the soldiers of DREAM launch suicide raids designed to kill mutants
and their families. Wingboy, Hologram and Cannonball move their
families into the MAGIC base for protection as the team prepares
for their final assault against DREAM. |
| 1997 |
In January S.H.I.E.L.D. gets a tip on a DREAM base located just
inside the Canadian border. A combined offensive comprised of MAGIC,
CHESS, S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives and Captain America's students is
successful in destroying the last of the DREAM strongholds. Joined
in the final offensive by Wolverine of the Avengers, the global
threat to mutantkind is finally over. After the battle, Wolverine
surrenders himself to S.H.I.E.L.D. agents ready to face charges
for actions taken while with The Avengers. He turns to Hologram
as he is led away and says that he has nothing left to fight for,
"Charlie can rest in peace finally, and so can I."
Global S.H.I.E.L.D. alerts are circulated for the capture of
Baron Blitzkrieg, Reaver and F.I.S.T. Colonel Nick Fury is convinced
that they pose no great threat with the DREAM military organization
destroyed.
Cannonball leaves MAGIC to become an instructor at the Academy.
As one of the final students under Xavier, Captain America finds
it fitting that he should help train the new breed of heroes.
Wingboy returns to his final year of law school, now determined
to form a New Mutant Defense League, a political organization
dedicated to preserve the civil rights of mutants around the world.
Whiplash announces his engagement to Guennivere. Hologram sends
his daughter, now 14 years old, to the Academy.

| 1998 |
Nick Fury commemorates the 10th anniversary of the MAGIC team
and recognizes their considerable effort in helping bring DREAM
and Cobra to justice. In the address, he grants the team official
S.H.I.E.L.D. status and commissions Whiplash, Hologram and Wingboy
as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. After a long conference with the three
remaining founding members, he announces the team will be renamed
M.A.G.I.C., the Meta-Agent Global Interdiction Corps and will be
the first U.N. and S.H.I.E.L.D. recognized super-team. Furthermore,
the team would be interviewing heroes from other countries to join
them as members of M.A.G.I.C. |
