"Bowling for Mesons"

Date: 11/19/87

Campaign Date: 11/11/87 - 11/12/87

After the heroes rest a little from their fight with the ghosts, Phantasm tries to turn up leads as to the captured Blue Jay’s whereabouts. Renting a car, the three heroes travel north to Vancouver, B.C. Since Phantashia has no normal clothes, Tom took her shopping so she looks like a yuppie business student. While Phantashia and Dr. Jackal get a room in their secret I.D.’s, Phantasm meets with Roger Bauchs of Northguard, Canada’s supergroup. Roger ordinarily controls the robot Centurion, but the metal hero was badly damaged that week fighting Plastique in Montreal, and Roger does not have the funds to have spare parts lying around.

Bauchs is fairly obvious in his wheelchair, so he was only able to gain enough information to point the heroes to the northern end of town. Our heroes enter an old bowling alley, and Phantasm (as John Clayton) tries to pick up info at the bar, only to be challenged to go outside. The annoyed patron is enthusiastic when John reveals he is a hero and that he’s on a mission to rescue Blue Jay. He offers to help out if he can. When Phantasm enters as a hero, the fellow backs him up.

A walled-off section of the alley is suspect, and when Phantashia walks through to check it out, she gets socked. She gets out quickly, and our heroes knock a hole in the wall, to reveal Vapor and Ground Zero.

Ground Zero, a jovial “brick”-type villain, has a glass-encased cranium with a bubbling brain inside. He seems to have an easy time bashing around Phantasm and Dr. Jackal.

Vapor is a psychotic villain afflicted with Muscular Dystrophy. Her main ability is to turn desolid and back again quickly. With her blasts of super-concentrated air and experience with her density-controlling powers, she easily pummels Phantashia senseless. The twisted villain then throws the downed heroine into the pins at the end of the bowling alley.

Meantime, Ground Zero is winning handily, until one final shot from Dr. Jackal breaks his dome. The resulting release of radiation spreads through the building. Luckily, the building patrons have fled.

Blue Jay is found in an alley similar to Phantashia. She is in bad shape from being hit all week with bowling balls and pins, not to mention the radiation. Phantashia has also taken radiation damage.

Vapor got hers when she went to “bowl” Phantashia, and the fleeing Dr. Jackal ran right over her and pulped her good. She was taken off to a psychiatric hospital.

Ground Zero imploded, and the alley and the villain sank into a crater then yards across. The radiation is so bad they have to roll lead across it.

Luckily, the owner had Mutual of Omaha Hero Insurance.
