| Mist, Phantasm and
Dominic continue taking turns watching over Prime.
She no longer freaks at the sight of doctors and nurses, but still is
a nervous and emotional wreck. The doctor remarks that he's rarely seen
such strong withdrawl symptoms.
Phantashia’s Father arrives
from Dynsphere, the magical world reachable through
the Twilight Band of Ultra-Realm.
He is enormous, but despite his imposing physique he is obviously weary
and emotionally drained. He has come because a great, stone-faced Dark
Lord has declared war on Dynsphere. This war is merely the latest in
a series of conflicts waged across magical realms. The stone god and
his chittering legions over-run each world in series, gaining more power
as they go. Phantashia’s father feels that if Dynsphere falls,
the Dark Lord will be invincible.
Meantime, Phantasm's brother David
calls up. Seems he's back from his excellent adventures in the Twilight
Band and popped up in China, of all places. After several adventures
brought him to London, he's back in the States now. He's holed up at
Chicago because of the massive snowstorm that has shut down Seattle.
Dr. Jackal and Knightsabre are out
clearing roads, pushing snow off of roofs so they don't collapse, fixing
power poles, et cetera. Knightsabre does her boss a favor by plowing
the Questar parking lot. Mist has to take time out
from visiting Prime to do the weather reports for AOK.
Phantashia calls everyone to tell them she is leaving. Phantasm asks
her to pick up his brother at the airport - in Chicago - before she
goes, especially since Knightsabre figured it would take too long to
do it her purple self.
Sylvia, Phantashia’s blind housemate, says she
foresaw the coming of the heroine's dad, and can even describe what
he looks like. Olga doesn't quite know what to make
of this.
Phantashia flies and gets Phantasm's brother, who, being cut from the
same cloth, makes the typical remarks. At Phantashia’s going away
party (Phantasm can't think of a better reason to party) he gets to
try out his lines on Knightsabre too. David says he is planning to concentrate
solely on stopping the drug trade, and has made arrangements to convert
a van into a mobile base. He says Radion has agreed
to join him, and he's looking for other takers. All of Forte are pretty
happy where they are.
David also mentions he's trying to get this hero from Denver, Vanguard,
to join him. David mentions he has been seen in the Seattle area recently,
probably on the trail of the Paliacci Family's illicit
drug operations.
Phantashia says goodbye, and she and her father leave through a mirror
and head for Dynsphere, her dad hoping that his more powerful daughter
can make a difference in the upcoming battle. Phantasm and Mist remark
that the stone-faced guy sounds a lot like the one who pounded on their
door a few weeks back... Darkseid or something.
After all this wonderful family-reunion stuff, reality sets in and the
heroes have to go back to work. Knightsabre is just trying to get her
department heads to understand the concept of really paying attention
to a budget when the sounds of a struggle echo down the halls. The doors
to the lab burst in, and three super-villains enter.
One, Slash, is a very well-known villainess with a
reputation for killing. Scatter, a Russian, is evidently
the leader of this little tag team, as she keeps boasting about having
the ultimate weapon - the big quiet fellow behind her, Rampager.
Rampager was thought to be destroyed some months ago. So much for that
theory.
Knightsabre is in her secret ID, and tries to smart off to the villain's
threats. Slash calmly threatens to kill her if she doesn't shut up pronto.
Knightsabre then asks if she can take one of the department heads to
the cafeteria, since he's feeling sick. They allow her to do this, bragging
all the while that they want Forte to show up, so they can kill the
heroes and take Seattle for themselves.
Chalk it up to youthful enthusiasm, but Knightsabre switches to her
costume and attacks all three of the villains. She does call Forte first,
however. Then she "beans" Scatter with a bowl of leftover
legumes. Slash immediately claws at her but doesn't really connect,
and the fight is on.
By the time the rest of Forte arrives, Knightsabre is bleeding from
several wounds and has thin, razor sharp knives sticking out of her
back, courtesy of Slash and her razor-honed gloves. Scatter has the
annoying habit of decreasing her density with no apparent effect, so
that Phantasm charges right through her. She also has an attack that
works directly on the mind, and a big one to boot. Rampager has been
designed by the Dummy to take on all of Forte with
his strength, gas attacks, and exhaustion touch.
Jackal fights Rampager up on the roof as Phantasm and Mist try to cope
with Slash and Scatter. Knightsabre is bleeding to death, and Mist manages
to stabilize her. All at once Vanguard appears and
begins taking pot shots at Rampager and the others. The heroes gang
up to neutralize Slash, and manage to knock her out. Rampager gradually
gets whittled down, and Scatter decides that she who turns and runs
away lives to fight another day. She scrams. Rampager, once knocked
out, explodes, flinging heroes and debris everywhere. When the dust
settles he is gone. The police and UNCLE show up, and
so does Johnny Quest, who can't believe the damage.
The place isn't even open yet! The villains arrived too early to steal
anything of value.
Knightsabre is taken to the hospital in critical condition, since she
moved after Mist had stopped the bleeding. The other heroes could use
a few aspirins themselves but at least Slash is in custody. She is wanted
for several murders across the country.
