Miguel Garcia grew up in an impoverished but loving home in East Los Angeles. While he spent his fair share of time in trouble with the police at an early age, he never got caught up in the gangs that killed his brother Richie. After the death of his brother and some timely police intervention, Miguel, at age 17, realized that he was going to have to be the one to help support his mother and two younger sisters. He felt the best way to do this and avoid the perilous street life in his neighborhood was to join the military.

Miguel Garcia enlisted in the U.S. Army just prior to completing high school and began going through the entrance testing and physical examinations. Before he was due to report, he was contacted by a group of officers that informed him that he matched a particular psychological and physical profile that they had been looking for. He would be given an opportunity to nullify his enlistment contract and his family would receive a sizable annuity for as long as he remained in the program. He realized the money involved would be enough to provide a better life for his family. There were risks, of course, but Miguel decided to take the opportunity.

Upon his acceptance of the offer, Miguel was relocated to NRG Labs in Seattle where he was told that he possessed latent superpowers. This was revealed by the military entrance tests that he had participated in. Now it was up to NRG to unlock those powers.

For the next year or so, Miguel Garcia learned not only how to unlock his powers, but how to control them. He found that he had the ability to increase, decrease, or even to focus and redirect gravitational forces. By proving his mastery over his newfound abilities, he was offered a place in NRG's own super-team: Armor Security.
