|
First Appearance: Forte
2000: "Tell Her What She's Won, Bob..." A highly-decorated combat veteran with a number of tours during the Vietnam War, Gunnery Sergeant Leo Selman, USMC was recruited to become a part of "Operation: Rocking Horse," a highly secret project aimed at giving enhanced abilities to troops. Code named "Sarge Steel," Selman and the other volunteers were to use their enhanced abilities to infiltrate enemy territory and rescue American POW's. "Operation: Rocking Horse" was closed for political reasons as American forces began to leave the conflict. With the project closed and the treatments required for sustaining the super-powered enhancements halted, Selman quickly reverted back to his normal state. After the war, Selman retired from active service, disillusioned that he and the others in "Rocking Horse" never had an opportunity to fulfill their mission. In the mid-1980's, he was contacted by several members of "Rocking Horse" who were making preparations to continue the mission. They claimed to have backing from a wealthy businessman based out of Cleveland who would provide them with what they needed, including the equipment and materials to renew the treatments begun in the "Rocking Horse" labs. Unfortunately, the "businessman" behind the operation turned out to be an international criminal cartel—CANON—that wanted guinea pigs to test their recreated "Rocking Horse" research on, and Selman turned the entire operation over to Nathan James, prosecutor for the Sixth District Court who, with the help of UNCLE and the FBI, brought the operation down. Selman worked as a supervisor for a high-end security firm for several years, but missed military life. He began to sideline as a military analyst on local, and eventually, network news broadcasts. From his exposure there, he was tapped to work with a team of military advisors for a Vietnam-based TV show and several motion pictures. In a strange twist, he was spotted on TV by former Cleveland federal prosecutor Nathan James who contacted him about an opportunity with a company that he himself was getting involved with. Leo Selman liked James, and better still, liked what he heard from him about this "Armor Security" thing. While Leo Selman would be considered the equivalent of the rank of "Captain" in the command structure of UNCLE, he prefers to be addressed as "Sarge." Selman is a loud, tough hombre who runs the field operations teams with strict, but fair, discipline. He is straight-forward and has no time for what he calls "politico-corporate crap," which sometimes puts him at odds with his boss, Eleanor Price. He has tremendous respect for Price and is the first to "back her plays" in front of the troops, but is not afraid to call her on the carpet behind closed doors. Leo "Sarge" Selman genuinely cares about all of "his people" and takes pride in how hard-working and professional they are, though he would never admit it to them. Selman is divorced and has no children, though privately he likes to think of those that put themselves in harms way at his command as his kids. |
