Real Name: Chentaba Obsessed with science from an early age, Chentaba studied it obsessively as he grew up on Dunn, the fourth planet from the sun of the Hedo star system. Though he always found himself frustrated by the limitations placed on his learning by the theocracy that ran the Hedo system. The official religion of the system, that permeated all levels of society on the worlds, involved the worship of their sun. Science had its place, but within the context of the religion, one that Chentaba, in his heart (certainly not out loud) doubted quite a bit. He lived his years feeling like an outcast, pursuing knowledge and never finding the time (or the patience) to marry and have children. He rose through the usual levels of ascension in the religion, reaching the expected High Elder status by his seventieth year. His only true joy was found on his journeys off-system to sample other scientific theories and disciplines, most of which were considered heresy on Dunn and were forbidden. While taking part in an annual required sabbatical to an orbital station/temple that was minimum safe distance from their sun, Chentaba found his life changed forever when a massive solar flare engulfed the station. His fellow pilgrims survived without consequence, but Chentaba was transformed. His body suddenly radiated massive heat. He could fly. He was able to survive in space and project devastating blasts of heat and fire. Word quickly spread of this event, because everyone in the system knew exactly what this meant. The Sun Kin had returned. It was long prophesied that the defender and redeemer of the Hedoans, the avatar of Hedo itself, would one day return. It had been ten thousand years since the spirit last chose a vessel, back when the Hedoans were set upon by an evil warlord from another dimension (or so the Bright Books told) and his vast armies, and the Sun Kin rose to fight them back and save his brothers. And now, it seemed, he had finally returned, and the blessed vessel was High Elder Chentaba. Someone who didn't believe a word of it. Suddenly a worshipped and embraced figure throughout the worlds of Hedo, Chentaba knew neither what to make of it or how to deal with it. Certain there was a scientific explanation for what had happened to him, he refused to believe in some kind of divine intervention...a fact, again, he most certainly kept to himself. He was overwhelmed by the interplanetary attention and adoration, and the frenzy of rabid religious and political debate that his transformation ignited. Why had the Sun Kin returned? Was the dread Sunkiller to return from his dark dimension? Did another unforeseen threat face their people? Unable to take it any longer, when Chentaba was contacted by the Realmsovereign about a chance to be part of the new Realmwatch, he leapt at the chance, using his religious icon status to convince the rulers of his system and its religion that this was the will of Hedo, that was he was to defend his people from beyond their borders. Now serving the Realm, Chentaba wears a suit he designed himself that keeps most of the massive heat he constantly radiates in check, something the requires regular releases of steam through the suit. A massively powerful being, he is also, largely, a crotchety old man who prefers solitude and study to dealing with people. He finally has the opportunity to be out among the stars and freely pursue scientific studies, something he does with pretty much all of his free time when not on Realm business. He's still forced to deal with travelers from his home system that seek him out for blessings or advice, something he feels he must put up with to keep up appearances and to allow him his continued freedom. As for what exactly happened that day, and why a solar flare changed him as it did? He still doesn't have a clear scientific explanation, but continues to search for one. Whether his people's beliefs are correct and there is some higher purpose for him to come, time alone will tell. |
