Born into an abusive criminal family in San Diego, Bethany Spencer never had a chance in life...even with the aquatic powers that she and her two siblings shared. Her older sister had already run away from home when the authorities arrested her parents, and Bethany and her older brother Chad ended up in separate state-mandated foster homes. Chad left at legal age and became the super-hero Thresher, who joined the original Forte for a time and was murdered during their war with Intercrime. Her older sister, who never cared for her welfare, became the seafaring super-villain Seawasp. Bethany, alone and in an abusive foster home, ran away and fled to the sea, leaving the surface world behind. She eventually met and fell in love with a young man named Kell, the prince of a hidden undersea race called the Cassians. She made her home in their city beneath the sea called Stronghold. Her hatred of the world above, and the way they treated the sea, led her to eco-terrorist activities, and it was during one such attack on an oil tanker that she encountered and fought the new Seattle hero Seahawk. When a group of heretic Cassians plotted to bring their warrior brothers back to this dimension and overthrow Seattle, she and the Cassians joined with Seahawk and a trio of other new Seattle heroes to stop them, a team that took up the Forte name thereafter. Having taken the name of her late brother's heroic identity, Thresher has aided Forte on occasions of need since. She's an angry girl of limited social skill who lives between two worlds, and has recently, though the help of friends in Forte, tried to become a part of the world above once more.
