History: Paul Seaborn graduated from Gotham State University with a B.S. in Chemistry and job offers from several Fortune 500 companies to do pharmaceutical research. Having no interest in the corporate lifestyle of his well-to-do parents, Paul joined the Gotham City Police Department, much to the concern of his family. He excelled, using his knowledge of science to attain a position on GCPD’s world famous bomb squad. It was while working in this assignment that a terrible accident happened resulting in the death of several members of his squad. While disarming an explosive device set in the power room of the Gotham City nuclear power plant, a hidden mercury trigger was activated, setting off the device. The explosion killed three police officers and started a chain lightning reaction within the plant. Some of this chain lightning struck Paul and, in a freak accident, allowed him to connect with the Speed Force that binds all speedsters. Paul awoke from the explosion over a mile away with only superficial burns on his uniform and equipment. It was only later that he realized that he had run from ground zero, covering the distance in a split second.
Blaming himself for the explosion that killed his fellow officers, Paul took a stress retirement from the GCPD when it was offered to him, and moved as far from Gotham as he could without leaving the continental United States. He has recently completed a teaching credential program, and is now in his first year as a high school Chemistry teacher in Seattle. Because of his powers, Paul feels a responsibility to help others, and has recently begun actual superhero activities. Donning a costume and calling himself Vortex, Paul Seaborn has become Seattle’s Supersonic Guardian and the newest member of Forte.
Power and Abilities: Vortex has the ability to tap into the Speed
Force, a dimension of pure velocity that connects all speedsters. Because
of this ability, he is able to run at incredible speeds and perform actions
in a fraction of a second that would take normal people all day to do.
Due to his increased reaction time and super reflexes, Vortex is incredibly
difficult to hit. He is able to punch an opponent hundreds of times in
a single second, or hit someone only once but at an incredible velocity,
causing tremendous damage. His top speed has never been calculated, but
is estimated at Mach 12 (Thirteen times the speed of sound at sea level).
When moving at super speed, Vortex is able to run on top of water and
up the sides of buildings at will.
Paul Seaborn
