MIST AND HAMMER PRIVATE CHAT

MIST: Matt.
HAMMER: What?
MIST: You know what.
HAMMER: Do we have to do this tonight?
MIST: You still haven’t gone to see them?
HAMMER: I’ve been busy, Syd.
MIST: Matt. She’s been here almost two years now. You can’t avoid it forever.
HAMMER: It’s complicated.
MIST: You managed to avoid her at the funeral. Yes, you can chalk that up to secret I.D. stuff since you weren’t there as Hammer. You were there with Armor. But you barely stayed an hour at the wake.
HAMMER: I told you we had to get back. I felt really bad about that.
MIST: And you were always on the opposite side of whatever room she was in.
HAMMER: You ever have a conversation with someone you killed?
MIST: Honey. You have to get over this. You started to do really good until Samantha crossed over. I know that brought it all back. And I’m sorry. But it’s not the same girl.
HAMMER: Could have fooled me.
MIST: Helliquin never had a chance. She was lost long before that day. That’s D’Arque’s fault, not yours. He’s the one who needed to pay for that. And he finally did. It wasn’t your fault. It was an accident. And you were doing the right thing. Nobody blames you except you. You know Jack and Sabrina don’t.
HAMMER: How could they not, Syd? Come on. I killed their daughter.
MIST: She tried to kill her father. And she was about to kill me, and Caleb. My son and I are here today because of you. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about that, and how grateful I am to you. You did what you had to do. I hate that we have to make those kinds of choices because of who we are. I hate that you had to and what you’ve gone through because of it. But you need to move on, Matt. You need to forgive yourself.
HAMMER: And not a day goes by that I’m not grateful I don’t have to make those kinds of choices anymore. I don’t ever want to have to again. Yes, I did what I had to do. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have to live with the consequences.
MIST: Can I ask you a terrible question and not have you hate me for it?
HAMMER: Yes.
MIST: Did your powers really go away?
HAMMER: Yes, they did. Honestly.
MIST: It’s just no one would blame you if you just didn’t want to use them anymore and had stopped.
HAMMER: Does anyone else think I did that?
MIST: A couple. Yes.
HAMMER: I guess I can understand that. No, they’re gone. It’s just the nature of my powers. The transformation. Every few years, a change. This last one just made them go away. Hopefully for good. I don’t want them anymore. I’m happy just being Matt Collins.
MIST: You ever think maybe you not wanting them made them go away? Some kind of subconscious trigger? Causing the physiological change?
HAMMER: Reed suggested the same thing when he was testing me once. Beats me. Either way, they’re gone. I really don’t care why.
MIST: Them being gone hasn’t solved the bigger issue, though, Matt. That’s something you still need to deal with.
HAMMER: I know.
MIST: Saying you know and knowing are two different things. You’ve got to come to terms with what happened. I know it’s easy for me to say. But you have to. Jack and Sabrina want you to, whether you let yourself believe that or not.
HAMMER: I don’t want them feeling guilt over this. That’s the last thing I want. Or that they deserve.
MIST: I’m not worried about them, babe. I’m worried about you. This is never going to be gone from your life if you don’t face it. And that means facing her. You need to get to know Samantha. She’s such a sweet girl, Matt. She’s so full of life and joy. She’s so kind and so loving. She’s everything that Helliquin should have been. Before D’Arque stole it from her and made her into a monster. There was no saving that Samantha. But this one’s here now. And she’s a miracle. And she’s the one who was meant to be in our lives. Everything’s worked out just like it was supposed to. Jack and Sabrina got a happy ending. It’s time for yours.
HAMMER: And what am I supposed to say to her?
MIST: How about hello? That’s a good start. Just talk to her, Matt. You need to get to know her so that you’re not seeing Helliquin every time you see her face. You need to link that face up with the real girl it belongs to. Believe me, honey, once you do, all that stuff you’re holding onto is going to start to go away. You don’t need to carry it anymore. No one wants you to. It’s either that or keep separating yourself from the people who love you. We all want you back.
HAMMER: It’s going to take time.
MIST: It’s taken too much time. It’s time to stop hiding. Go see them, Matt. Go see her. Please. I just want you to be happy again. We all do. You deserve it.
HAMMER: Jury’s still out on that one.
MIST: It’s not. You’re the only one who blames you. Forgive yourself, honey. If not for yourself, do it for Jack and Sabrina. We all need to bury this once and for all.
HAMMER: I’ll try.
MIST: You promise?
HAMMER: I promise to try.
MIST: Guess I’ll take that. I love you, you know.
HAMMER: I love you too, Syd.
MIST: Looks like the big meeting’s starting. Guess we should get back to it.
HAMMER: Yeah.
MIST: I’m always here, Matt.
HAMMER: I know. And that means a lot. Thanks.
